Laramie was settled in Union Pacific Railroad line in 19th century,
and got name by a French trapper LaRamie, one of the first Europeans
to visit that area. LaRamie was later lost in mountains around
Laramie and never found, mountains, city, river and few other
things got name in his honor. Permanent structures like churches,
schools, stores and houses where build in 1868, when the first
train entered town.
Early business where included slaughterhouse, rolling mils,
tie plant, brick yard brewery, glass-blowing plant, plaster
mill and railroad yards as well.
In 1998 city gained world notoriety after controversial murder
of gay student of Wyoming University after which award-winning
movie ‘The Laramie project’ was made on that subject.
Laramie became first city in Wyoming that prohibited smoking
in enclosed workplaces, like bars, restaurants and private clubs
but there where lot of disputes about that law, and few big
tobacco companies are involved.
The Geological Museum at the University of Wyoming is open to
the public and contains more then 50.000 minerals, fossil and
rocks including dinosaur exhibit. Museum offers gallery exhibit,
workshops, lectures and classes.
Wyoming territorial prison, Downtime Laramie historic district,
Old Main, Barn at Oxford Horse ranch, Bath Ranch, St. Mathews
Cathedral Close and East Side School are just few of many Laramie
exhibits.
Great Lakes Airlines provides daily commercial flights between
Laramie Regional Airport and Denver, Colorado. Airport is 3
miles west from central business district and it is financed
by the City Of Laramie and Albany Country.
